PokerStars to introduce new VIP Steps on PokerStars.uk

$

PokerStars, the world’s largest online poker network, will introduce changes to their VIP Program starting September 1 on their PokerStars.uk site. The UK players have the option to become beta testers of the new Steps before it’s in full effect starting January 1st 2016. The VIP Steps are part of a wave of changes that have swept PokerStars ever since it was taken over by Amaya Inc.

“PokerStars Dylan” explains the VIP Steps on the TwoPlusTwo thread PokerStars – VIP Steps United Kingdom Beta Test:

“VIP Steps are a new way of earning FPPs by completing a Progress Bar that will be displayed on the table and in the lobby. This progress bar will show players how close they are to completing their next VIP Step and how many FPPs they receive each time that they complete a VIP Step. Instead of linearly earning FPPs in the background, FPPs will be released upon completion of the progress bar at the table. One of the primary purposes of Steps is to surface VIP Rewards to players so that there is a more intuitive relationship between playing and earning FPPs. The visualization is a key component to this. We expect this to be a more engaging method for players to earn and understand their rewards. The Steps are designed so that most players can complete a Step in a typical session or two and will thus have something to play for in any given session.

VIP Steps will also help players track their progression towards maintaining and increasing their status in the VIP Club by showing how many Steps are needed to either maintain or progress to the next tier. The Steps progress bar will also display notifications when approaching a new VIP Status, and alerts when risking loss of VIP status due to the end of the month approaching. Players will be able to customize whether you want to see these notifications or not. At the end of the month for monthly statuses, and end of the year for Supernova+ VIP statuses, players will receive 50% of the prorated value of their incomplete current Step.”

The player reaction has been mixed, some seeing the positive sides of the change, while others are not satisfied with the progress PokerStars is showing with their VIP Program.

These are not the last changes of the year to the VIP Program though. PokerStars have announced that they are evaluating their entire VIP Program and major changes are to be expected.

PokerStars MAtthew made a statement about the upcoming changes on the thread ** Supernova Elite Pursuit Thread 2015 – with related chat **:

“We have recently begun the process of evaluating our VIP rewards for 2016. The VIP Club is a key element of our product offering so any changes are thoroughly evaluated and discussed across multiple departments. It is our intention to announce changes by mid-October.”

Give your feedback and take part in the discussion on the TwoPlusTwo poker forums. PokerStars actively participates in the discussion on the forums and have listened to the player feedback as poster ESKiMO-SiCKNE5S mentions:

“actually a lot has changed by pushing them to do things on 2+2…

you may have noticed that the min bi has gone up from 20, to 30, to 40 over the last couple of years; which has been great for the games.”

August High Stakes PLO action wrap-up

August brought back the PLO nosebleed action on PokerStars after a long drought. The resurgence of Viktor “Isildur1” Blom sparked the games and soon there were a number of PLO sharks playing with him at the highest PLO stakes found online.

Mixed in the action was the Finnish pro Sami Kelopuro, known on PokerStars as “LarsLuzak” and here are some of his thoughts on the games vs Isildur1: LarsLuzak on his recent 200/400 PLO games vs Isildur1 and Ravenswood13

The biggest pot of the month went Isildur’s way to the tune of $365k with a wrap and a flushdraw against WithColor’s flopped set. (Click on the image to replay the hand at highstakesdb.com)

The month ended up very well for Isildur1 and he ended up winning a whopping $2.2M dollars as you can see below from the month’s Top Winners chart from highstakesdb.com:

The MTT pro Fedor “CrownUpGuy” Holz has started a charity stream on Twitch for WCOOP tournaments on PokerStars. Fedor is an Elite Pro on runitonce.com, Phil Galfond’s poker video training site and he’s a respected MTT player with a number of big online tournament wins under his belt, including the WCOOP 2014 Main Event bracelet.

Now Fedor has decided to give back. From his Twitch site where you can follow his WCOOP grind and donate money for a good cause:

“This stream is not only about poker, but also about doing good at the same time. This is why I have decided to use this opportunity to raise funds for a good cause. To determine the charities that should benefit from this charity stream, I reached out to Raising for Effective Giving (REG Charity). They use a rational and scientific approach to maximize the EV of donations. The funds raised during the course of this stream will be split 50/50 between the Against Malaria Foundation (AMF) and the Deworm the World Initiative (DtWI).”

Fedor was also lately featured on the Joe Ingram podcast where he starts off talking about the charity stream, check out the episode here:

Twitch poker revolution

Twitch.tv has slowly been gain momentum in the poker world. But what exactly is Twitch? Twitch is a live streaming video platform and it’s owned by Amazon.com. It focuses primarily on video gaming, including playthroughs of video games by users, broadcasts of esports competitions, and other gaming-related events. Twitch launched in 2011.

2015-09-09_11-20-56Twitch has failed to attract big time poker streamers until recently. Much of poker’s popularity on Twitch has to be attributed to Jason “JCarver” Somerville who has gained a large, loyal following to his streams. He made it to the final table of a WCOOP event recently and had almost 38,000 followers at the time he busted out from the tournament. This is the new record for Twitch poker audience, beating his own previous record of 21,000 viewers. Jason is not just some random streamer, he’s part of the Team PokerStars Pro team and holds one WSOP bracelet and has total live tournaments winnings of 3.5M according to thehendonmob.com. You can find his entertaining streams at http://www.twitch.tv/jcarverpoker. He already has a total of over 8 million views on his channel.

Another Team PokerStars Pro who has been actively streaming during the WCOOP is Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier, also a highly successful MTT pro. He has a strong background in e-gaming, he’s a former Starcraft Champion and the first European pro gamer in Korea. He has win over $10m in live tournaments and is a 2x WCOOP champion and SCOOP Champion. Let’s see how ElKy does in this year’s WCOOP, his Twitch channel can be found at http://www.twitch.tv/elky/

Third Team PokerStars Pro actively streaming his poker action is Jaime Stapler and he will also be streaming his WCOOP play. He specializes on MTT’s and you can follow him at http://www.twitch.tv/pokerstaples

Even some of the poker’s old school heavyweights, such as Daniel Negreanu and Phil Hellmuth have been streaming their poker play recently, but not during the WCOOP. Twitch offers a great platform for this long-time poker pros to give something back to the community. You can find their streams at http://www.twitch.tv/dnegspoker and http://www.twitch.tv/philhellmuth, respectively.

Some of the online poker’s giants have started their Twitch streams as well, although their streaming is not as consistent as for example Jason Somerville’s production, who streams on an almost daily basis. Randy “nanonoko” Lew, another Team PokerStars pro and online poker’s ultimate grinder streams at http://www.twitch.tv/nanonoko and Viktor “Isildur1” Blom, the king of online poker, has done streams for Unibet poker at http://www.twitch.tv/unibetpoker

In the PLO world the most active Twitch streamer has been JNandez whos is the middle of his $100k in 100 days challenge at the moment. You can follow him at http://www.twitch.tv/jnandezpoker. Another PLO streamer worth checking out is Rohit “GodlikeRoy” Bhasin, PokerStars Team Online Pro, at http://www.twitch.tv/godlikeroy/

The PLO high stakes and nosebleeds action has been exciting for the past month. WCOOP plays a role with better action in general, but the re-emergence of Viktor “Isildur1” Blom has sparked some serious nosebleeds games going that hadn’t much earlier this year.

The games in September have been running mostly between Ike Haxton, Isildur1 and JayP-AA. The two gentlemen mentioned last battled in the biggest pot of the month so far with Isildu1 attempting to pull off a big bluff on the river. Click on the image to replay the hand at highstakesdb.com

Bálint “Nlzkm9” Sebestyén was kind enough to accept our invitation for an interview on the aftermath of his WCOOP bracelet win at WCOOP-15 for $57k. He is one of PLO’s rising stars.

BM dresden4 profileAbout You

1. What is your name, age and where are you located? What is your personal twitter account?

Hi! My name is Bálint Sebestyén, and I’m from Hungary. I don’t use twitter.

2. What are Your online poker Screen names?

Nlzkm9

3. How would you define yourself as a poker player? / What poker games do you normally play? Are you learning any new games?

I play only PLO for about 6 years, and this year I play 5card PLO also, when there is a good action.

4. What do you most enjoy about your job?

Freedom is very important for me. In this job I am my own boss, and I like my boss:)
Poker players can travel the whole world, while they don’t need to give up any workdays really.

5. Who are the top 3 players in your main game from your home country in your personal opinion?

danfiu, omaha4rollz, probirs

6. What reg in your game do you respect most? Can you briefly describe why?

Cobus83, Actionfreak. They can play an unbelievable amount of hands, while having a terrific win rate. A lot can be learned from them

7. Besides yourself who do you think the most underrated poker player is?

I think there no such a thing as an underrated poker player, since the results tell everything. Either you are a winner or not.

Past

1. Why and when did you start playing poker? Do you still play for the same reasons?

During the University, I lived with my brother when I saw him playing a few freeroll tours. I thought to give it a try, and I started learning on PokerStrategy. I started to build up my bankroll, which was really useful during school, and later I choose to stay with poker.

2. What were the best and worst months of your poker career? What happened?

The worst months were at the end of 2013, when I found some really good rake races. I had to play a horrible amount of hands to be in the top. This resulted in leaving out game development and learning, and I felt burned out because of the lot of working hours. Next to this I played losing poker, and I even finished lower in the rakerace than I expected. I won some money at the end, but overall it had a really negative effect on my game.

My best month was June, this year. I played really well, and it was a record month for me in winnings.

3. Are you satisfied with the last 12 months of your poker play?

Absolutely. I started to prepare myself for this year in last June, to be an SNE this year. I’m a little behind schedule, but I’m confident that I’ll do it.

4. How did Black Friday impact you? How did you adapt after Black Friday?

It didn’t have an effect on me at all.

5. What was the biggest factor in your development as a player?

After the unsuccessful rakerace, I started a mental and professional self development, read a lot of books, which really help me to get back on track.

6. What was the biggest mistake(s) you have done as a poker player?

To play rake races, and chasing rakeback, (however this lead to the before mentioned self development), and that it resulted in leaving out the learning.

7. What’s your biggest prop bet?

Haven’t done any.

grindPresent

1. How do you prepare for your poker activities?

It changes month by month. Sometimes I read about mental things to get ready in my head, other times, like now, I just analyzing hands in Holdem Manager.

2. If you could pick the brain of anyone in the world for 3 hours, who would he/she be?

Hmm, maybe Stephen Curry. I would like to see what is the world like with his eyes.

3. What 3 poker pros should PokerStars sign to their team online roster?

Dan Bilzerian(lol), Korda György, Stephen Curry.

4. What is your favorite way to relieve stress when running bad?

I’m never running bad(just kidding). I go to the gym, or run, or i go to the party whit my friends.

5. How much volume are you playing on Eurosites?

I am playing only on PokerStars.

6. Why are you not playing mid/high stakes already? If you are, what are the 3 most important things that got you there?

I’m playing mid/high stakes. The most important: learing from others. Besides game selection, and trying to always get better.

7. What is the most important positive change you’ve made to your poker approach this year?

I see through much better some given siuations, and I’ve learned a lot of new things from my opponents.

Future

1. What are your poker and other goals for the next 12 months?

First to reach my goals in 2015. The WCOOP bracelet in the pocket, but I want to reach the SNE status on PokerStars. For next year I’ll set my goals in January.

2. Are you confident that you will meet those goals? Why?

Of course! I reach my goals every time.

3. Do you see yourself still playing poker in 10 years?

It’s a hard question. This is a career, like other sportcareers, and one time it will be over, now I dont know when. It’s a very difficult mental job, in which you have to redefine yourself day by day, week by week, and it’s hard to keep up your motivation continuously. I will play for the next 1-2-3 years for sure, after that, we will see.

4. Do you have any ambition to coach/teach other players?

I am a hand analyzer on PokerStrategy, but that’s all. I’m not doing any coaching. Probably I won’t do it in the future either.

5. What’s the poker dream for you?

Win a SCOOP and WSOP event. Fortunately I’ve managed to win TCOOP+WCOOP already

6. How do you see the poker landscape changing in the next five years?

I don’t really bother with this topic. I believe the best will be successful in all environment.

7. How much time are you putting into studying financial issues like investing. What are your preferred sources for this? What investments are you making with your poker winnings?

For now, I’m focusing on my poker career. When I will have some free time next to it, I’ll spend some time studying the investment opportunities.

Other

1. Do you have any regular non-poker hobbies? Whats your favorite way to spend your spare time?

I love basketball, and I spend my time with my friends.

2. If you could give you from five years ago (make it ten if over 30) one major piece of advice, what would it be?

Improve your poker/mental game every day! Move from your comfort zone every time!

3. What are the 3 things everyone should have on their bucket list?

To get together with a beautiful woman, start a successful business, live a happy life.

4. Do you follow any poker podcasts or poker players on Twitch?

Nope

5. If you could change one thing with online poker, what would that be? What if you could change one thing with live poker?

I’d make online poker a bit more social somehow.
I’d put a ‘reset’ button on the short-tempered players, who cant handle their losses without agression, and when they are about to blow up you could reset their mind with this button to the ‘pre-lose’ status.

6. What is the best place and the best restaurant your have ever visited?

There were many many good ones, I can’t pick one. Come to Hungary.

7. Who do you challenge to do the Poker Player Snapshot next and why?

ActionFreak or Cobus, because they are the best.
